Increasing Zoo Access for LAUSD Students

This program increases equitable access to nature by providing transportation and programming for second and third grade students within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), specifically in Local District Central (LDC), to experience the LA Zoo. Programming includes teacher training to support student learning.
The program’s goal is to expand access for students to visit the zoo, particularly as 70% of all elementary schools in this district are located in Very High Park Need areas.

In its first year, the program provided 7,313 elementary LAUSD students with free field trips to the LA Zoo, offering many their first-ever visit. During their trip, students participated in various activities, including hands-on birding exercises, storytime sessions, docent-led tours, and educator chats.
