Recreation Leader Trainee Program

The Recreation Leader Trainee Program is a job training initiative designed to equip young adults ages 18-25 with the skills, knowledge, and hands-on experience needed for a career in recreation. Participants engage in a variety of training opportunities, including educational workshops, specialized training sessions, guest speaker events featuring local government officials and City staff, industry conferences, and practical on-the-job experience. This program provides a strong foundation for those looking to build a future in the field of recreation.

In the first year, 14 participants successfully completed the training program, earning a total of 56 certifications. They engaged in career development, self-improvement, and team-building workshops while gaining essential certifications in CPR/First Aid, Customer Service, Cashiering, and Food Handling. Additionally, they received hands-on training in leading activities, as well as setting up and breaking down for special events. At the conclusion of the program, participants were given the opportunity to interview for employment with the City of El Monte’s Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department.
