Deukmejian Wilderness Park

In the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, at the northenmost extremity of the City of Glendale, the Deukmejian Wilderness Park occupies a rugged 709-acre site. The park offers streamside woodlands and scattered remnants of big-cone spruce woodland. The park also offers visitors trails with spectacular views of the Cresenta Valley and the Los Angeles basin.

Grant funding was used for developing and improving the Deukmejian Wilderness Park which included the development of a new trail head, construction of roads and parking lots for both vehicles and horse trailers, construction of an outdoor amphitheater classroom, development of picnic areas, construction of a restroom building and information kiosks which included an environmental display area. Funding was also used for the installation of the utility infrastructure and partial preservation of the stone Le Mesnager Barn.

Additional grant funding was used to provide improvements to walkways, equestrian paths and fireroads. Finally, funding was used for the renovation of an equipment storage building.

The project is along both banks of the Tujunga Wash, from Vanowen Street to Oxnard Street. The project will create a naturalized meandering stream course along the west channel bank; add pathways for walking and biking along either side of Tujunga Wash; and incorporate rest area amenities, interpretive signage, and appurtenant structures. The naturalized stream course will accept low flows diverted from the Tujunga Wash and meander throughout the 6,000-foot project reach. Downstream flows will outfall back into Tujunga Wash. The east side of the channel will consist of various greenway improvements including a bike path, walkway, landscaping, and other amenities.

Malibu Lagoon State Beach

There’s something for everyone at Malibu Lagoon State Beach: scenic trails, historic museums, salt water fishing at the pier and wildlife viewing. For water enthusiasts you’ll find some of the best waves at the world famous Surfrider Beach. Come low tide to explore tide pools or anytime for swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving and boating.

A leisure two-mile loop trail will take you around the lagoon, through tide pools and on to Malibu Pier. At the pier you’ll find beach equipment rentals, harbor tours, restaurants and a surf museum. Grab a bite at the pier or picnic on the beach. On the way back visit the Malibu Lagoon Museum or check out guided tours of the historic Adamson House.

Grant funding was provided for the pier and the newly restored lagoon. In addition, the City of Malibu completed a Stormwater project in 2011 to protect Santa Monica Bay from hazardous material spills and pollution.

Agoura Hills Recreation Center

The Agoura Hills Recreation & Event Center is open to the general public for a variety of programs and activities. The building serves as the new home for City of Agoura Hills’ Community Services staff as well as the Cultural Arts Council. In addition, there is a dedicated space for Senior Citizen programs and classes and a state of the art Teen Center, just to name a few things!

Grant funding was provided for the construction of the recreation center and the new outdoor education/interpretive center. More grant funding is being provided for the construction of a new trailhead and trail from the Recreation Center to connect to existing trails in the surrounding Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and the regional trail system.

Vincent Lugo Park grounds include lighted youth baseball diamond, youth multi-purpose athletic field, Laguna de San Gabriel Nautical (Dinosaur) Playground, picnic tables, barbecues, multipurpose trails, pedestrian bridges, restrooms and the Girl Scout House.  The current project involves the development of a new play area and the installation of fitness equipment at the park.

Horsethief Canyon Park

Horsethief Canyon Park is a 50 acre park which includes a small and large dog park, play equipment, shade shelter, restrooms, picnic tables, benches, soccer fields, hiking trails and protected wilderness horse trails.

Grant funding was used for the development of Horsethief Canyon Park. Development included construction of soccer fields, a picnic area, a tot lot, volleyball & horseshoe courts, as well as wildlife corridor enhancement and construction of a nature trail, restroom, and other infrastructure improvements.

Grant funding was also used for the construction of additional multi-use trails in Horsethief Canyon Park which helped improve circulation and accessibility in the Park.

Finally, funding was used for the widening and clearing of the Poison Oak Trail and construction of a hilltop picnic area which included installation of picnic tables, benches, hitching posts and the planting of trees.

Grant funding was provided for the construction of the Encanto Nature Trail, a 1,200 foot-long trail and viewpoint along the San Gabriel River.
